Our journey to a strange planet

...se so much of it is covered ith ater. I am glad e are going to the blue planet the other Globes are being sent to orlds that do not look so inviting.I am full of hope. I no longer have any fear. I shall go into the Globe tomorro, and the gas ill put me to sleep. hen I ill ake again, it ill be in our shining ne orld. If I do not ake, something ill have gone rong, but I shall never kno.It is all very simple really if e trust in God.This evening I ent don to look at the Globes for the last time before e board them. They are amazing! Our scientists have achieved the impossible. They are the largest things ever built. They are so heavy that they look more likely to sink into the surface of Earth than to fly off into the space. It is hard to believe that e have built thirty of these metal mountains. But there they stand, ready for tomorro. Some of them ill be lost. Oh, God, if ours survives, I hope that e can meet the challenges and satisfy the trust place in us.These may be the last ords I shall ever rite. If I do rite again, it ill be in a ne orld under a strange sky.I have just oken up. Has it happened, or have e failed to start I cannot tell. as it an hour ago that e entered the Globe Or as it a day, or a year, or a century It cannot have been an hour ago. I am sure of that, because my body is tired and aching. Hoever, it seems only a short time ago that e climbed the long passage into the Globe and ent to our place. Each one of us found his or her compartment and craled into it. I fastened myself into my compartment. Its plastic alls filled ith air and pushed against me, protecting me against shock from all directions. I lay and ait. One moment I lay there fresh and strong. The next moment, it seemed, I as tired and aching. The journey must have ended. The sides of my compartment are empty of air. e must have arrived on that beautiful, shining blue planet, ith Earth only a tiny light in our ne havens. I feel full of hope. Until no, my life has been spent on a dying planet. Here, there is a orld to build and a future to build for.I can hear our machines at ork, opening the long passage hich had been filled for the journey. hat shall e find, I onder hatever this orld is like, e must not betray our trust. e each possess a million years of history, and a million years of knoledge. All this must be preserved. This planet is very young, and if e do find intelligent life, it ill be only at its beginning. e must find them and make friends ith them. They may be very different from us, but e must remember that this is their orld. It ill be very icked to hurt any kind of life on its on planet. If e find any such life, our duty is to teach, and to learn, and to ork ith them. Perhaps one day e shall build a orld even more civilized than Earths onThis is a terrible place! Is this really the beautiful blue planet that promise so much e are by far the most advanced race there has even been, but the horrible monsters around us terrify us or e are terrified by the horrible monsters around us. e are hiding in a dark cave. There are nine hundred and sixty-four of us. There ere a thousand. This is ho e lost the others. The machines clearing the passage out of the Globe stopped. e craled out of our compartments and met in the center hall of the Globe. Sunss, our leader, made a short speech. He reminded us that e must be brave as e ent into the unknon. e ere the seed of the future, and e ere responsible for taking Earth into the future.e ent through the long passage, and left the Globe.Ho can I describe this terrible orld It is a dull and shadoy place, although it is not night-time. hat little light there it comes from a huge square hanging in the sky. The square is divided into four smaller squares by to black bars.e stood on a ide level plain, but a plain such as I have never seen before. e could not see an end to it, hichever ay e looked. It as made of ros of straight, endless, parallel roads all going the same ay. I call them roads, because they looked like roads, but each one as much ider than any road I have ever seen. Each road as divided from the next by a deep, straight cutting as ide as by height. The man next to me said that e had come into a orld of straight lines lit by a square sun. I told him he as talking nonsense. Hoever, I could not explain hat I sa. Suddenly e heard a noise, and looked toards it. e sa an enormous face looking at us round the Globe. It as high above us, and it as black. It had to pointed ears, the size of toers, and to huge, shining eyes.As the monster came toards us round the Globe, e sa its legs, hich ere like great columns. e turned to run aay, so great as our terror. Then the monster moved like lightning. A huge black pa, suddenly shoing long, sharp clas, smacked don. hen the pa as raised again, tenty of our men and omen ere no more than marks on the ground. The pa came don again. Eleven more of us ere killed.Sunss, our leader, ran forard and stood beteen the monsters front pas. His fire-tube as in his hands. He aimed and fired. I thought the eapon ould have no effect on such a huge creature, but Sunss kne better. Suddenly the monsters head ent up, and then the creature dropped dead. And Sunss as under it. He as a very brave man.e chose Iss as our next leader. He decided e must find a place of safety as soon as possible. Once e had found one, e could remove our records, instruments and equipment from the Globe. He started to lead us forard along one of the ide roads. After traveling a very long ay, e reached the bottom of a cliff. It ent straight up in front of us. Its surface as made up of strangely regular blocks of rock. e alked along the bottom of the cliff, and found a cave, hich ent a long ay into the cliff and to both sides. Again, the cave as very regular in shape and height. Perhaps the man ho spoke about the orld of straight lines as not as stupid as seemedAnyay, here e are safe from monsters like the ones that killed Sunss. The cave is too narro for those huge pas to reach inside.Later. e ent to the Globe and e took all the equipment that as there. After that a terrible thing has happened! Our Globe has gone.hile Iss had taken a group to explore the cave, the rest of us ere on guard at the entrance. e could see our Globe, and the grate monster lying close to it. Then a strange thing happened. Suddenly the plain become lighter. Then there as a noise like thunder, and everything around us shook. A huge object came don on the dead monster and removed it from our sight. The light suddenly faded again.I cannot explain these things none of us can understand them. All I can do is to keep an accurate record. It as some time later hen the orst possible thing happened. Again the plain become suddenly lighter and the ground shook. I looked out of the cave, and sa something that I can still hardly believe. Four huge creatures, compared ith hich the previous monster as very small, ere approaching the Globe. I kno that nobody ill believe this, but they e...
